What may happen when kids play?

As much as playing and relaxation is an important aspect of a children’s life, we must understand that dangers are lurking everywhere and anytime. As parents, we must often take note of the possible dangers of play which may affect our kids. Let us run through the type of dangers our children may be exposed:

 Drowning. Very often, we hear of kids being in the news who drowned at swimming pools due to a lack of parental supervision or drowning in water bodies such as lakes.
 Choking. This affects toddlers and infants who tend to chew or place toys in their mouths. For older children, it could be swallowing of food which is not bitten into small pieces or accidental swallowing of larger portions of foods
 Car accidents. It involving school children who do not use the traffic lights or the zebra crossings or even children who do not have their seat belts on while in the car.
 Electrocution. When I was in primary three, I remembered turning on a switch when my hands were wet, and I got such a rude shock that I remembered the feeling even till today!
 Bodily action. Kids being active and energetic, are always jumping and running around. If not careful they may suffer from injuries like falls, sprains, cuts and abrasions.
 Lost child. Sometimes, when your child is too engrossed in playing, he may tend to wander off and find himself in unfamiliar territory.

Perhaps, the rule of thumb for the parent to prevent such dangers when your child is playing is to have a close eye on him. Never ever leave him alone or in the presence of other kids. Setting some ground rules and inculcating some habits are also very important. For example, make it a habit to ensure your child has the seat belt on at all times in the car or always stress the importance of using the zebra crossings to cross the roads.
Since drowning is a relatively common problem observed, you may want to consider allowing your child to go through some basic swimming lessons. For infants and toddlers, beware of the toys which they are allowed to play. Look out for labels of these toys as they have some recommendations for the suitable age groups of the children. 
