Tips for handling children with tantrums
Children can often throw tantrums when things do not go their way. Some parents choose to give in, and giving in regularly to the children will lead to a reinforcement of the behaviour. The child will then subconsciously realized that they will get what they want if they throw tantrums. This will lead to spoilt and pampered children. It must be noted that tantrums are part of a child’s development. As they mature and learn how to express themselves better, the tantrums will become fewer. The child may throw tantrums due to the following reasons: anger, frustration, disappointment, seeking for attention, sadness, or even hunger. Some tips to deal with children throwing tantrums or preventing tantrums include: Be a good role model. A child values compliments, so when he does something correctly, giving praise to show your appreciation is an indication to the child to keep up the good work. Keep calm and be firm. Often, children want their tantrums to be brought across so that they can have their way. By being calm and firm in your speech, this is to show your child that you are not overly affected by his tantrums. Take a break. You may be on the verge of exploding when your child is throwing his temper. Send him to his room, and both parties can cool down. Surely, there is a better way than tempers being hurled? The parents must bear in mind that they have to be consistent. Always remember not to give in. The child may be happier when he gets what he wants but in the long term, you are actually cultivating a bad habit. As a rule of thumb, do remember to make up with the child after the tantrums! A hug or a kiss will let your child know that he or she is still very much treasured.
