The Truth about Fruit Juice!
Author Unknown
This topic could be something new to most parents. Fruit juices are not as healthy as they seemed to be. We were brought up with the knowledge from our parents that fruit juices is a healthy alternative until we chance upon some articles which explains otherwise. Although fruit juices are definitely much better than soft drinks in terms of vitamins and minerals, it must be noted that fruit juices contain a large amount of sugars. An over-consumption of sugar results in the following in your child: • Obesity. Fruit juices consist of natural sugars and although they are fat free, it takes regular exercise to burn of these sugars. Without burning some calories, it will lead to a gradual accumulation in weight and ultimately, obesity. • Dental problems. The high sugar content coupled with the acidic effects of fruit juices will cause tooth decay, cavities and damage to the tooth protection coating called enamel. • Reduced nutritional value. One myth about fruit juices is that they are a rich source of fibres and vitamins. However, these nutrients are more evident in fresh fruits. A balanced diet will be one which contains sufficient carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and fibres. • Diabetes. No explanation required on this topic. In general, too much sugar can result in your body not being able to cope, diabetes may result though it is not really common in children Some tips to guide parents regarding consumption of fruit juices in their children. 1. When possible, substitute juices with water. Nothing beats the good old fashioned water! 2. Limit the amount consumed. The younger the children, the lesser they should consumed. As a guide, children age 1-6 and 7- 18 should take about 140 grams and 280 grams respectively. 3. Avoid taking fruit juices just before going to bed. In fact, it is no different from taking supper! 4. Encourage eating of fresh whole fruits instead of taking fruit juices as substitutes. 5. Purchase fruit juices with the “no added sugar” labels. There are many available in the market. The price may be slightly higher, but it is beneficial to health in the long run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhVWjHw9VNE
