The Importance of Play and Relaxation for kids
Everyone needs a time to rest and relax, play and recreation and our children are no exceptions. The phrase: “all work and no play makes little William a dull boy” aptly emphasizes the importance of relaxation in our lives. Let us take a brief look at the specific categories of play: 1. Exploratory play. It occurs in infants and toddlers where they learn to interact with the environment through their five senses such as touching, hearing, tasting etc. 2. Constructive play. By planning, building or constructing things from scratch, some examples include playing with sand, plasticine and Lego. 3. Pretend play. The child uses his imagination and creativity to immerse themselves in the world of fantasy and creates new situations, such as a battlefield in the playground and using a stone as a grenade. 4. Social play. This involves the child co-operating, socialising and interacting with other children, and it happens in childcare centre and in schools. 5. Skilful play. Here, the child develops a technique or a skill. Origami, computer games and sports are just some of the examples. We must never underestimate the benefits behind play! It is very essential for play to be present in their lives so as to have the best and memorable childhood. Emotional development. The child will come into touch with various emotions and they are precursors to having a child who can “feel”. Language development. Through interacting with others, he will be able to learn and improve his existing set of language skills and express himself more clearly. Physical and muscular coordination development. Over a period of time, his psycho-motor skills are developed and this is essential in his growing up process. Intellectual development. By investigating, imagining, analysing, exploring and deducing, his mental skills are gradually being brought into another level. Your child will become more astute and mentally agile. So hurry, remember to give your child the correct balance of work and play! Compromise is the key, and we must always strive and aim to give our children the best possible childhood!
