The Amazing Single Parent
Author Unknown
The emerging presence of single child families is an increasing trend in today’s societies. In this entry, we shall look at this trend. The admin team of MyLittleSunshine has compiled feedback on the following issue which could be important and relevant to single parent families. Let us be aware of some of the challenges and obstacles faced by the single parent: • Finances. The parent has to shoulder all the financial burden, which is proving to be escalating in Singapore. Electricity, water, mortages, school fees, food items are some of the few to be mentioned. • Gender issues. A single parent father may not be able to explain certain things as clearly as a single parent mother to the daughter and vice versa. • Responsibility. Similarly to the financial aspects, the single parent has other areas which he or she needs to look after: the child’s academic performance, washing the clothes, cleaning the house, proper nutrition for the kid etc. • Childcare. Single parents, being the sole breadwinner, are not able to stay at home to look after the children. Solutions include sending the child to the grandparent’s house or a nearby child care centre. And often, the quality of the childcare centre’s services could be an issue • Emotional support. Once again, single parents are alone. They do not have their other half for emotional support, which will be more pronounced when the stresses of working and looking after the child starts gushing in. Here are some tips from my friends who are single parents: 1. Reduce household expenses. Go for cheaper alternatives or use water and electricity wisely. In Singapore, we can opt for NTUC housebrands which are cheaper and saves money in the long run! 2. Public transport. The car, otherwise known as the depreciating asset, takes up a sizeable portion of expenditure. Using public transport can help release some cash for other purposes. 3. Finding similar people for support. It will be heartening to get to know some other single parents. Or perhaps join an association whereby there are tips and activities for single parent families like : http://www.helpfsc.org.sg/ 4. Multi-tasking and prioritizing. There are many things to be done and it helps if single parents are able to maximise the time taken for each task and also deciding which one is more urgent to be completed. A “To do list” will be helpful. 5. Take a break when needed. It is not easy functioning as a single parenting so much that many of them are often overworked and under rested. A break can do wonders to recharge a person mentally and physically. Here is a related video, enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXja4sIuKFs
