Movies for your child!

As a child, I remembered that I am excited when my parents gave the slightest hint of bringing me to the movies. I loved movies then, and even now, as a working adult, I am still quite a movie buff! Of cause, movies appeal to different people and different child but in general, I have the following recommendations why a parent should bring their children to watch movies:

• Family event. There are 1001 things a family can do together, and a movie happens to be one of them. It can be followed by a cosy dinner or a trip to the supermarket as a family. It is a proven method to spend quality time with everyone.
• A form of relaxation. The children these days have many forms of relaxation means, ranging from the internet, TV and portable playstation consoles. A movie can help your child take his/her mind of academic matters, with the advantage of you by his side as the movie commences. The internet and TV may lack the parental supervision factor, but definitely not the movie, since you’ll have to be beside your child in the theatre at all times
• Morale of the story. Different movies have different themes to them. The child will be curious to what happens during the movie, and it’s the role of the parent to explain certain details. In short, important lessons can be learnt too. Hence, do not underestimate a movie!

There again, not all types of movies are suitable for all children. It really depends on the personality of the child and parents should decide what type of movie the child will enjoy and gain the most out of the movie. For example, a horror movie is definitely a no-go. Some action movies are suitable, provided they do not contain scenes of blood and gore.
Having said that, children being the innocent darlings of our lives require a movie which can instil laughter and important lessons in them. Animation movies in the mould of Finding Nemo, Shrek and Ice Age are highly recommended for children. Some local productions are also quite good (I Not Stupid, Army Daze, Singapore Dreaming). We are very fortunate that Singapore has a rating system for all movies shown as this is a guide which parents are able to decide which movies they can watch with their children.

If your child has never been to a movie before, perhaps you may need to take note of a few things to make the movie session a more enjoyable one:

1. Ensure he does not roam around alone. He could get lost or annoy other viewers.
2. Bring him to the toilet just before the movie. A trip to the washroom in the midst of the movie will definitely disrupt viewing pleasures.
3. Snacks. Well popcorn and hotdogs at the movies is fine, just make sure it is not a regular affair. You can consider packing healthy snacks and bring some water along too.
4. Tell your child what to expect before the movie. If your child feels uncomfortable about it, there is still time to forego the movie, rather than sitting through and have a traumatizing experience.

As part of our articles, we will be reviewing some upcoming movies showing in theatres. It will consist of a synopsis and also why this movie is suitable for your kids. So do make it a point to check our web page for updates! 
