Keeping a portfolio for your child

I was doing some spring cleaning in my house the other day when I stumbled upon some unforgotten treasures. Tucked in a drawer in the corner of my room, lies a file which contains a few of my childhood’s documents – my kindergarten and primary school report cards, the art pieces which I’ve drawn, photographs of myself at that time and a couple of birthday cards which I’ve received. It certainly brought back some memories!

At that very instant, I thought of something which may prove helpful to parents - Keeping a folder or a portfolio for your child to document his progress through the years. One method which I’ve thought of is to have a file labelled as “Jason 2008” and inside this file consists of everything about your child in the year of 2008. The contents of the file could range from the quizzes and tests your child have taken, drawings, photographs, report cards, activities which he has participated and many more!

There are many advantages to having one:
o Memories. When your child has grown up, these folders will be looked upon as an immense source of memories. This is something which money can’t buy.
o Giving the child pride. By showcasing his work pieces and other progress, when your child looks at his folder, he will feel proud of his achievements and feel very appreciated.
o Monitoring progress. Keeping records will assist the parents in deciding if the child is on the right path in his all rounded development.
o Neat and tidy. Well, instead of having bits and pieces scattered everywhere in the house, putting them in files or portfolios can ensure the documents are kept nicely and neatly.
o Self evaluation by the child. The child will know by looking through the previous year if he has made any significant progress or development this current year.

In closing, keeping a portfolio for your child has many advantages. In fact, the only probable disadvantage is the effort and time spent to document everything. However, rest assure that many years down the road, you would probably be reminiscing in your childhood memories when flipping through the folder! 
