Basic first aid for kids!
Children are always lively, active and energetic. Being so full of energy and vitality, accidents are bound to happen at home or outside. It will be beneficial for parents to have some basic knowledge of first aid should the kids get injured. Below are some suggested tips: 1. Keep a first aid box within reach at home. Make sure it is well furnished and none of the items are expired. You’ll never know when you may require its usage. 2. Enrol for a first aid course. You can include a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course too. The first aid course prepares you for potential cases of sprains, burns and cuts etc. The CPR will come in handy in cases of drowning or choking. Remember, by being equipped with these skills, not only can you help your children, you can also render help to others at the same time too! 3. Keep a list of numbers. Make sure they are stored in your mobile phone or the wallet. These numbers include the ambulance, fire rescue, police station, or even your house, relatives’ number. In times of panic, even the most familiar of numbers will blank out from the human mind 4. Medications. It could be medications for the child’s asthma, allergies, fits etc. I was told that there are 5 main aspects to basic first aids: stopping bleeding, bandaging fractures or sprains, burns, treatment of shock and restoring breathing. Stopping bleeding from bruises and superficial wounds can be done using dressings. Take note to wash and sterilize the wound before applying the dressing. Treatment of shock is important. Shock is the body’s reaction to trauma and the most basic thing to do is to keep the person warm such as using a blanket. Restoring breathing is important too. Other than CPR, we must also be prepared to clear the passageway of food should the child gets choked on something. Handling fractures via bandaging gives temporary relief. It helps to minimize the movement of the joints before seeking treatment from doctors. Care must be taken not to bandage too loosely which will result in an unsupportive bandages or too tightly which would hinder blood circulation. The link below is an animated guide to basic first aid steps. Do make an effort to check it out! http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=285&id=1567
